About
I started photographing golf courses shortly after I left the R A F, in 1994. Over 24 years as an Air Photographer provided very little experience towards this new career. As a result I would think that all but a couple of the images I produced during those first two years have disapeared in a dusty corner and never since been used. Customer critiques balanced out from the extreme of "amazing" to "the worst I have seen and I would not put them on a box of chocolates". I suppose in the end it all helps. All photographers work to perfect their skills and are occasionally rewarded by those moments of magic, when it all comes together, the camera works perfectlyand an incredible glimpse of our worls is revealed. I would imagine that few would expect it to happen on a seemingly flat and featureless golf course. But it does. I have been fortunate, over the years, to have had three books published and, with my retail outlets and golf clients, had the good fortune work with, and for, some very supportive people. I am 58 years old now, that is 37 years in the photography industry in one way or another, and still I wonder at the power of photography and have a thirst for new challenges. The Mamya RZ 67 has been my work horse for many years, supported by a fuji 6 X 9 (always shooting Velvia 50 ASA pushed) but now, with the digital age now firmly upon us, I am moving to Canon and have a 20D, 5D and eagerly await the IDs Mk111. Despite these advances in technology I will continue to use velvia, not least on my 6 x 17 panoramic, although it is becoming increasingly difficult to find a film processor. For inspiration I look to the work of photographers who bring us the stark reality of a war torn and hungry world, but I balance that with the work of wildlife photographers who capture the magic of nature. Of course I cannot close wihout mentioning the father of landscape photographers - Ansel Adams - surely an inspiration to us all. |
