The three bunkers, visible from the tee, must be avoided but of equal danger is going too long where the drop off at the back of the green is deep, steep and wide. This 8 foot deep gulley, with no view of the flag or green, may provide one of the most difficult 2nd shots in golf - onto a downhill surface with not much room to stop the ball. In the background nearly two miles of beach beckons the evening walkers but the lack of swimmers is an indication of how warm the sea is. Building commenced in 1158 and took over a century to complete. Stripped and abandoned in 1559 -1561 it was left to decay and fall into ruin.
